WOW- September 2019

February 21, 2019

Riva Shrestha moved from Nepal to Canada 4 months ago. Starting life in a new place has its own set of challenges but starting high school can be far more emotionally especially when you are about to turn 15.

Riva loves art and music and is hoping to continue exploring her creative passions this school year. But it’s not easy being a new student in a new country. Luckily for Riva, before school started she joined the World of Welcome (WOW) orientation day which takes places in schools apart of the Peel District School Board. The SWIS workers from Polycutural led the WOW orientation day at and Mississauga Secondary school. The WOW program aims to ease the transition for newcomer students and families entering the school system by providing orientation activities and information sessions.

Through our WOW program Riva met a guidance counsellor before the school year started to go over her courses, she learned about the bus systems and made new friends through the program.
